I was at both of these shows, and the one in ‘89 at the National Ballroom in Kilburn, I still have my tickets from all three shows. I loved them all and understood what Bowie was doing. At one the shows in Brixton an audience member, having heard that Mr.Bowie was trying to stop smoking, threw a packet of cigarettes at him which hit him in the eye, that became apparent after, having been attended to at the side of the stage, Bowie addressed the audience about it .
I was there, met a big cool dude who invited me backstage to meet Mr Bowie, but I rejected the invitation because I was afraid. I was so in awe of Bowie as a supreme artist ( more important to the 20th century than Picasso ) that I knew I wouldn’t know what to say to him. Also I didn’t want to intrude on his time backstage. Since then, I have discovered he was very kind to tongue-tied admirers, so perhaps I should have been brave enough to go. His creativity was colossal. His loss was a deep blow. He is irreplaceable and always will be.
