David Bowie performed in Gijón with a shorter recital than advertised
A recital significantly shorter than what had been announced opened last night in Gijón the Spanish stage of the tour of British singer David Bowie, who performed only 20 of the 28 scheduled songs. More than 20,000 people gathered at the Las Mestas racecourse to attend the show Sound and vision , a retrospective of the artist’s repertoire, which will be repeated today at the Casa de Campo auditorium in Madrid, and next Sunday at the Olympic stadium in Barcelona.
David Bowie, dressed in dark trousers and waistcoats and wearing a white shirt, appeared before the public just five minutes later than the scheduled time. With Space oddity he started to review some of the most paradigmatic titles of his 20 years of artistic career, compiled in his LP Change Bowie, which were applauded by an audience that the artist sometimes invited I will accompany you with palms. A simple staging, a large-scale stage and two video screens, in which live images of the singer were mixed with montages and with black and white video clips, wrapped up a recital in which the real show resided in the figure Bowie himself, one of the myths of rock. Bowie sang, but also danced, mime and even simulated a passenger dream lying on the floor of the stage. It was 10 pm and 55 minutes of recital had elapsed. When he got up, it was to renew the show with new vigor. He retired momentarily from the stage three or four songs later, returned to resume the performance a few minutes later and opted finally at 22.40 hours for terminating the show that had scheduled its end time for 23.00 hours. The seduction of the British artist, a pleasant temperature and a more affordable price than in the other two Spanish cities in which the singer will act, contributed to the prediction of the capacity being surpassed.

Un recital sensiblemente más breve de lo que había sido anunciado abrió la pasada noche en Gijón la etapa española de la gira del cantante británico David Bowie, quien interpretó sólo 20 de las 28 canciones previstas. Más de 20.000 personas se congregaron en el hipódromo de Las Mestas para asistir al espectáculo Sound and vision, una retrospectiva del repertorio del artista, que hoy repetirá en el auditorio de la Casa de Campo, en Madrid, y el próximo domingo en el estadio Olímpico de Barcelona.
David Bowie, vestido con pantalón y chaleco oscuros y con camisa blanca, compareció ante el público apenas cinco minutos más tarde de la hora prevista. Con Space oddity inició el repaso a algunos de los más paradigmáticos títulos de sus 20 años de carrera artística, recopilados en su elepé Change Bowie, que fueron aplaudidos por un público al que en ocasiones el artista invitó a que le acompañara con palmas. Una puesta en escena sencilla, un escenario de grandes dimensiones y dos pantallas de vídeo, en el que se mezclaban imágenes en directo del cantante con montajes y con videoclips en blanco y negro, arroparon un recital en el que el verdadero espectáculo residía en la figura del propio Bowie, uno de los mitos del rock.Bowie cantó, pero también bailó, hizo mimo y aún simuló un pasajero sueño tumbado en el suelo del escenario. Eran las 22.00 horas y habían transcurrido 55 minutos de recital. Cuando se puso en pie fue para renovar con nuevo brío el espectáculo. Se retiró momentáneamente del escenario tres o cuatro canciones después, volvió a reanudar la actuación unos minutos más tarde y optó finalmente a las 22.40 horas por dar por terminado el espectáculo que tenía programada su hora de finalización para las 23.00 horas. La seducción del artista británico, una temperatura agradable y un precio más asequible que en las otras dos ciudades españoles en las que actuará el cantante contribuyeron a que las previsiones del aforo se vieran superadas.

Bowie specifically chose a smaller band for the tour, saying in a contemporary interview that “It’s a much smaller sound. It’s not quite as orchestrated as any of the other tours. The plus of that is that there is a certain kind of drive and tightness that you get with that embryonic line-up, where everybody is totally reliant on the other two or three guys, so everybody gives a lot more”
