This is about two-thirds of the full session. Very good performances of the songs – Reeves’ guitar work got more refined as these sessions went on.
The interview gets very interesting when he talks about Brian Eno’s working methods in the studio – mockingly at first, but then gets more serious in his description of how it works. Love his impression of Brian
The chat portions here are often very funny, and sometimes very informative. David talks about recording in Philadelphia in the 70s, touring, and there’s good humoured banter about adapting I’m Afraid of Americans for other territories. It’s lovely to hear the audience reactions clearly to David and Reeves,
in particular the ‘yessss’ when he annouces they are going to play I Can’t Read.
Technical notes.
Both the sources used had defects that blighted the listening fo me: one source had beautiful sound on the interview, however one channel often had the sound of what was probably the music on the other side of the tape leaking through. The other source had processing of the sound on the interview that wasn’t to my personal taste, however ironically the sound on the music was better in some ways. The music was used from both sources, and the interview from one source only – I carefully worked on both sources and edited together the results. On reviewing this while working on it, in the mono portions of the interviews – these were switched to single channel where interference from another recording had crept in on one channel – some hiss could sound irksome at times, but I found that reducing it more just dulled David’s voice too much.
