.REVIEW Christian R. 1997

3:15pm : Here’s the Theatre Antique, a beautiful Roman place and such a marvellous one for a Bowie concert…
It’s still open at this time and you can visitate it while all the staff prepare s the stage for tonight’s show !

3:30pm : We start waiting as 50 persons are already there, slowly toasting under the hot Sun . Only two small posters tell there will really be David Bowie live tonight…

6:00pm : A lot of people now have gathered. Some fans are from everywhere in France, some come from Switzerland (Geneva), some Belgians (Brussels, some friends !), some from Holland (Amsterdam)…

7:00pm : Everyone stands up at once and rushes forward without any logical reason, as always… Then the gates open, and it’s a real fight to try to gain some more strategic places !
Our bags are searched without too much conviction and then it’s an exhausting run thru the stairs to try to reach hte stage and have the better places we can. We succeed in being just at the foot of the stage, at the second row just two meters right from the microphone…
4.500 persons will fill slowly the theatre…

7:20pm : A guy from the staff comes forward the stage and sellotapes a list at the foot of the microphone. I try to have a look at it comes to be the lyrics of the first verse of ‘Quicksand’!

8:00pm : We’re told that the show will last two hours and that the first part will be led by DJ David. Then follow some drum’n bass music some in the audience won’t appreciate too much (this is my case).
In fact we learn we’re listening to the first part, and indeed the guy on stage must be DJ David ! As the staff prepares the stage, our DJ guy has fun, so alone amidst the fans who have come to see Bowie…
Suddenly Gail Ann Dorsay appears at the left of the stage looking for a while at DJ David’s prestation and maybe the audience too. She tries to be discreet but now everyone waves to her. She gives in return her most beautiful smile then disappears pronto !
We ‘ll surely see you soon again…

9:37pm : The night’s almost there and the cheers become more present as they want now Bowie more than anything else…
Then, amidst immense waves of cheers, in comes slowly David with its guitar, smiling and coming to the front of the stage, just beside us at our left…
He immediately plays the first bars of ‘Quicksand’, alone, while the rest of the band comes onstage as slowly on his back. All the band then joins up with an explosion of orange lights ! The version is splendidly sung, a perfect introduction for any Bowie fan…
The sound is perfect for an open air concert and the situation of this half-moon theatre allows the sound of the audience to be massive as in a hall !

The audience is hysterical as the song ends and Bowie loving that can’t help thanking enthusiastically the crowd in French !
Then ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ begins and this is the Bowie/Gabrels version as in the ’96 Tour. Many fine guitar works on this one and a great song…
David takes his guitar again and starts chiming out some notes, telling he was born on the Mississipi River ! Then a small recognizing riff says it all, ‘Jean Genie’ is on the way !

This show has many differences compared to the Clermont show for example, which was more experimental. Now the show is shorter and the setlist is more accessible for guys who are not specially acquainted with Bowie’s music.
Now the crowd is on fire as the first songs of the show, which was something more difficult to obtain with strange drum’n bass versions of ‘Low’ and ‘Heroes’ instrumentals in shows like the Clermont one…

The scenery looks as simple as it was last year : a large white sheet at the back of the stage with three strange balloons beside the drum-kit. Three big globe-balloons lie on stage as three big eyes : a blue, a maroon and a green one !
Just behind gail Ann Dorsay there’s a very small statue and some incense burning (!).
After ‘Jean Genie’ the set followed with ‘Outside’, then ‘I’m Afraid Of Americans’ (the album version, not the NIN one which will come later…).

A big American flag is screened on the white sheet during that song. Then comes ‘Battle For Britain’: some strange coloured designs on the screen around a big Bowie face in the left side (taken from the Sound+Vision Tour sessions !!!)for it.
Sometimes David comes forward and touches some fans with his fingers making flows of hysterical cries around !
Then comes ‘Seven Yeras in Tibet’, one of the great songs from the last album, ‘Earthling’. inspired by the Heinrich Harrer’s book of the same name, Bowie revives his old passion for buddhism and his defence for a free Tibet. for theat occasion a picture of the Dalaï Lama is screened changing into the Tibetan flag.
‘Fame’ and ‘Stay’ are incredible in their new version, Reeves guitar is greater than great giving a new energy to these 20 year’s old songs.
David plays then some saxophone for ‘Looking For Satellites’

David Bowie Tour band 1997 Earthling Tour
Superb Bowie Performance From The Earthling Tour. David Bowie’s 20th studio album was originally released in February 1997 on Arista Records. Earthling showcased an electronica-influenced sound partly inspired by the industrial and drum and bass culture of the 1990s. It was the first album Bowie self-produced since 1974’s Diamond Dogs.
The Earthling Tour started on 7 June 1997 at Flughafen Blankensee in Lübeck, Germany, continuing through Europe and North America before reaching a conclusion in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 7 November 1997. On August 14, ‘97, Bowie performed at Hungary’s Student Island Festival in Budapest, where he put on a quite extraordinary show, accompanied as he was by Reeves Gabrels on guitar, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Zack Alford on drums and Mike Garson on keyboards. Playing just a few tracks from the new record plus a fine selection of back catalogue gems, the entire show was broadcast, both across Eastern Europe and indeed in the US too on selected FM stations. Previously unreleased this remarkable gig is now available on this priceless CD for the first time..
